Woolworths Limited is Australia and New Zealand's largest retail group, with over 3,000 stores and 175,000 employees. In 2006 the company celebrated its 80th birthday. Woolworths has 340,000 shareholders, 40,000 of who are company’s employees.
Company’s operations also include petrol sale through Caltex Woolworths co-branded service stations and Woolworths Plus Petrol, liquor, Big W general merchandise stores, and consumer electronics through Dick Smith, PowerHouse and Tandy. Beginning as a single basement store in Sydney, Woolworths now has a shopping centre in almost every metropolitan and regional centre of Australia.
In 2006 the revenue of Woolwoths reached US$28.3 (EUR 21.9) billion.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has released the report on its inquiry into the competitiveness of retail prices for standard groceries. The report found that the introduction of Aldi stores in the eastern states has had a beneficial impact on competition.
