The Tengelmann Group (Tengelmann Warenhandelsgesellschaft KG) is a modern, internationally-minded firm based in Germany with a 136-year tradition, founded in 1867 in Wissol.

Tengelmann is one of Europe's leading food retailers (along with German rivals ALDI Group, METRO AG and REWE-Zentral). The company operates more than 8,000 supermarkets, drugstores, and general merchandise stores in 15 European countries under such names as Tengelmann and Kaiser's (supermarkets and drugstores) in Germany, Obi (do-it-yourself supply stores), Plus (a discount food chain), and KiK (apparel and general merchandise stores). The sons of chairman and former CEO Erivan Haub now run the company. Today the company employs over 150,000 people.

In the corporate policy of the Tengelmann Group, ecological and socio political commitment has a high priority. Due to this focus the company has won many awards for its energetic environmental protection program originally initiated by the owner of the company.

The revenue of Tengelmann reached EUR 24.5 billion in 2006.

Rewe faces probe in Czech Republic

The German retail giant, Rewe, struck a deal in March to buy the 146 Tengelmann's Plus stores in the Czech Republic to merge the chain with its own discount business, Penny; but the acquisition will now face a domestic anti-trust investigation as the European Commission has agreed to allow the Czech Competition Authority to rule on the takeover.
