J Sainsbury: from food to banking services with a long history, beginning in 1869, the British Group, Sainsbury, is today a leading company in the distribution of consumer goods in UK. The group runs 350 Sainsbury’s supermarkets and 300 shops branded Sainsbury's Local and Bells Stores, Jacksons Stores and JB Beaumont. It employs 148,000 people. Customers can also buy online on Sainsbury's Online.

The group caters for more than 14 million customers per week, offering a range of articles from food to healthcare products, of which just under half are sold under the company's own brand. As a result of its number sales outlets, the company owns a significant amount of real estate, which it manages via its Sainsbury's Property division. Finally, in association with the bank HBOS, Sainsbury's Bank offers individual clients a diverse range of banking services (loans, insurance, fund management, credit cards).

For much of the 20th century Sainsbury's was the market leader in the UK supermarket sector, but in 1995 it lost its place as the UK's largest grocer to Tesco and in 2003 was pushed into third by ASDA. In 2004 the CEO of the company Justin King has developed a recovery programme which brought Sainbury’s to the leading position on British market.

In fiscal year 2007, which ended in March, the company’s sales reached GBP 18.5 (EUR 27.2) billion.
