Safeway, which was founded in 1915, is one of North America's largest food retailers, with about 1,740 stores located mostly in the western, Midwestern, and mid-Atlantic regions of the US, as well as western Canada. It also operates regional supermarket companies, including The Vons Companies (primarily in Southern California), Dominick's Finer Foods (Chicago), Carr-Gottstein Foods (Alaska's largest retailer), Genuardi's Family Markets (eastern US), and Randall's Food Markets (Texas). It also owns e-retailer GroceryWorks.com. Outside the US, Safeway owns 49% of Casa Ley, which operates about 125 food and variety stores in western Mexico.
The company operates stores that provide an array of dry grocery items, food, and general merchandise, as well as features specialty departments, such as bakery, delicatessen, floral, and pharmacy. The company employs 207,000 people.
Safeway was formerly known as SSI Holdings Corporation and changed its name to Safeway Stores, Incorporated. Further, it changed its name to Safeway, Inc. in 1990. Safeway is based in Pleasanton, California. The company’s revenue in 2006 reached US $ 40.2 (EUR 30.6) billion.
