At the junction of groceries, merchandise, and services, you'll find Carrefour (which means "crossroads"). The world's second-largest retailer Carrefour operates more than 12,500 stores under some two dozen names, including hypermarkets (Carrefour), supermarkets (Champion), convenience stores (Shopi, Marché Plus), discount stores (Dia, Ed), and cash-and-carry stores (Promocash) in about 30 countries in Europe, Latin America, and Asia. France accounts for nearly half of the retailer's sales. Carrefour secured its spot as the Number 1 European retailer (based on sales) when it merged with food retailer Promode's early in 2000 and raised its banner over those stores.
Carrefour currently operates in three major markets: Europe, Latin America and Asia. With a presence in 30 countries, over 52% of group turnover derives from outside France. Carrefour also seeks to support local suppliers, with some 90-95% of the products on its shelves sourced locally, depending on the country. In this way, the group meets the special needs of each market in which it operates. Furthermore adaptability is important for Carrefour, which implies that the Carrefour stores adapt to the habits and living conditions of their customers.
The company, which employs more than 450,000 people, reached turnover of more than EUR 100 billion in 2006.
