Albertsons

Head office: USA

The company was established in 1939 in Boise, Idaho. Albertson’s LLC (formerly Albertson's), whose slogan is “it means a great deal”,  is all that's left of what was once the nation's number 2 supermarket operator.

Stung by competition, the 2,500-store chain sold itself in mid-2006 to a consortium that included rival grocer SUPERVALU, drugstore chain CVS, investment firm Cerberus Capital Management, and Kimco Realty for about $9.7 billion. SUPERVALU and CVS cherry picked the company's best supermarket and drugstore assets.

Subsequent divestments (most notably 132 stores in Northern California) have left the company with more than 340 Albertsons supermarkets and about 115 Express fuel centers in about 10 states.
The revenues of the company which employs over 230,000 people, reached US $ 40 billion in 2006.

Albertson’s has recently dumped its loyalty card system in order to differentiate itself from competitors and “put every customer on a level playing field every day”.
