Head office: The Netherlands
A tattered prince of global food retailing, Royal Ahold owns or has interests in about 3,480 supermarkets, discount stores, and specialty stores in Europe and the US. Its status as one of the world's largest grocery retailers has declined but it remains a leading supermarket operator along the East Coast of the US under names such as Giant Food and Stop & Shop. Royal Ahold runs Albert Heijn, the number 1 food retailer in the Netherlands and Schuitema, a Dutch retailer and food distributor (73%-owned). Other interests include e-retailer Peapod and a majority stake in Scandinavian food seller ICA AB. In 2007 it sold food distributor U.S. Foodservice for about US $7.1 billion and is selling TOPS Markets to Morgan Stanley.
After 2003 accounting scandal Ahold had to reposition its strategy in order to improve company‘s health. Now Ahold is committed to delivering results in four key areas: restoring financial health; re-engineering the food retail business; recovering the value of U.S. Foodservice; reinforcing accountability, controls and corporate governance. The prices of more than 2,000 products have been lowered since then, including the prices of an additional 1,000 private label.
