Kirin Brewery
Head office: Japan
Longtime leader of the Japanese beer market, Kirin Brewery Company, Limited in the early 2000s was overtaken by its arch-rival, Asahi Breweries, Ltd. Kirin nevertheless continues to sell two of the most popular beers in Japan, Kirin Lager (the country's oldest beer brand) and Ichigan Shibori.
Domestic alcohol beverages is the core business of Kirin Group, and in 2007 celebrates its 100th year of operations. Using Anheuser-Busch's facilities in Los Angeles, the wholly owned subsidiary of Japan's Kirin Brewery Company brews Kirin Lager (one of the world's biggest beer brands), Kirin Draft, Kirin Ichiban, and Kirin Light. The beers are most popular in the western US, home to many Japanese-Americans, and are distributed through Anheuser-Busch's network of wholesalers. Kirin has agreed to outsource production, as well as distribution, to the US beer maker starting in 2007.
In July 2007 Kirin Brewery Co., Ltd., began activities under an alliance formed with leading Japanese wine producer and importer Mercian Corporation. The overseas alcohol beverages business of the company is focused on the core markets of Asia and Oceania. Kirin Brewery is continuing to develop partnerships arising from Kirin’s existing capital investments in Lion Nathan Limited (Australia) and San Miguel Corporation (Philippines), and actively expanding the business presence in rapidly growing China. Overseen by company’s holding company Kirin (China) Investment Co., Ltd., initiatives in China include construction of a new beer brewery in Zhuhai City in the Pearl River Delta region, and alliances with leading local breweries in the Yangtze River Delta area and Northeast China.
