Cencosud considers buying Unimarc

Chilean retailer Cencosud said it might be interested in buying supermarket chain Unimarc, sending shares of Unimarc soaring more than 13%. Cencosud, one of the country's biggest supermarket operators, said it had asked Chile's competition watchdog for permission to evaluate Unimarc's assets so it could decide whether to press ahead with a buyout.

Cencosud, which owns the Jumbo, Santa Isabel and Las Brisas supermarket chains, said in a statement it had not yet reached an agreement with Unimarc. Unimarc shares jumped 13.4% on the news, while Cencosud shares climbed 0.99%.
