Tengelmann may sell 250 Spanish Plus discount stores to Carrefour
German retailer Tengelmann is in talks with French retail giant Carrefour to sell its Plus discount stores in Spain. A Tengelmann spokesperson confirmed this to the German financial magazine Wirtschaftswoche. Tengelmann started its operations in Spain in November 1994, and could never realise its ambitions on the Iberic peninsula.
In 2002 Tengelmanns chief executive Karl-Erivan Haub went to Spain to open the 200st Plus discount store. Then he set the target of 600 Plus discount stores by 2008. Now however, the counter stops at 250 and Plus suffers from competition from Aldi, Lidl and Día. The latter is the discount banner from Carrefour, which currently operates 2,760 Día stores in Spain. According to Tengelmanns spokesperson Rene Beutner in Wirtschaftswoche, talks about the integration of the 250 Plus stores in the Día operation are already underway.
