Retailers in Denmark team up
According to statistics from the Danish Agricultural Council, meat scandals have resulted in Danes changing their dietary habits with consumers eating more fish and game at the expense of pork and beef. In addition, more Danes are buying meat and fish at specialty stores rather than at supermarkets.
In response, grocery retailers Dansk Supermarked, Coop Danmark, Aldi Nord and Lidl have joined a plan aimed at promoting a healthier lifestyle among consumers. Also, the retail association De Samvirkede Købmænd (DSK) and Dansk Erhverv, which is the Danish chamber of commerce, have said they support the plan, which among other things includes efforts to reduce packaging sizes.
The Dansk Supermarked Group has developed into one of the most solid players in the retail industry with chain stores such as Netto, Bilka, Føtex, Tøj & Sko, and A-Z. Established more than 40 years ago, Dansk Supermarked has become the largest retailer in Denmark. Since the 1980s, Dansk Supermarked has been expanding its presence in other European countries, including Poland, Sweden, Germany and the UK.
Coop Danmark A/S is a subsidiary of Coop Norden AB. The Coop Norden group has an aggregate annual turnover in Denmark, Sweden and Norway of DKK 100 billion and has approximately 64,000 employees. Consequently, Coop Norden is the largest player in the Nordic consumer goods market.
