Eroski acquires 75% stake in Caprabo

Spanish retailer Grupo Eroski has acquired a 75 per cent stake in the Caprabo supermarket chain. The Basque retailer paid €1.3bn for the majority share in Caprabo and therewith outbidded rival Carrefour. The Spanish business paper Expansion reports this today.

Caprabo’s three founding families Botet, Elías and Carbó and the spanish savings bank La Caixa will be holding the remaining 25 per cent of Caprabo, Expansion said. Apart from Carrefour, also investor Pemira (owner of the local chain Dinosol) and retailer El Arbol are said to have been interesting in acquiring the stake in Caprabo. Following this acquisition, the Basque retailer Eroski will add operations in Catalonia to its business. Up to now Eroski wasn’t represented there.
