Lidl denied building permission in Malta

The Developmental Control Commission (DCC) board with the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) has refused the proposed development of the construction of a supermarket plus adjacent parking area in Mosta.

The development application was submitted by Charles Polidano on behalf of Lidl. The German-owned chain which operates approximately 5,000 stores and has established itself in over 17 countries, has been trying for some time to put up a chain of supermarkets on the Maltese Islands. The application was turned down on grounds that the requested building area is situated outside the development zone.

Alternattiva Demokratika (AD), Malta’s green party, welcomed the MEPA's refusal. Alternattiva said that it was thanks to the pressure exerted on the previous Mosta Local Council by their candidate that a last minute objection to the development was submitted by the local council.
