CBD reports sluggish growth

Brazil’s biggest supermarket operator Companhia Brasileira de Distribuicao (CBD) said same-store sales grew by a meagre 0.3 per cent in January compared to the same month in 2005.

When adjusted for inflation same-store sales only went up 0.7 per cent in the same month, according to CBD. Gross sales, including new stores opened in the last 12 months, went up by 4.8 per cent in January to 1.34 billion Brazilian reals, while net sales rose 6.4 per cent to 1.125 billion reals. Sales of non-food products went up by 13.5 per cent in January, while food sales dropped by 3.7 per cent.
