Auchan considers market entry in India
French retailer Auchan is planning a market entry into India. It is said to be in talks with a potential local partner, the Bombay Dyeing of the Wadia Group, which is finalising its retail venture for malls, hypermarkets and supermarkets.
Wadia however is rumoured to be close to signing an agreement with another French retailer, Carrefour. The latter also has plans to enter the promising Indian market and has allegedly been in talks with several local companies. The Wadia Group and also the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group and the AV Birla Group.
The Birla Group recently acquired local Indian retailer Trinethra (170 supermarkets and convenience stores in the regions Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka). Birla also announced it will launc 15 supermarkets at Nashik, Pune and other Tier-II cities in western India in Jun 2007, Financial Times reports today. Birla may also set up hypermarkets and aims to procure the produce directly from vendors.
