Chilean retailer D&S to expand cross border by 2009
Chile's major hypermarket and supermarket chain Distribucion y Servicio SA (D&S) plans to begin expanding abroad by the end of 2009. The Chilean business newspaper Estragia reports this, quoting D&S’ company official Claudio Hohmann.
D&S is currently studying the possibilities for its expansion plan and the markets with the highest growth potential. Up to now the retailer’s strategy was aimed at strengthening its position in Chile, where it’s performance has been hurt by increasing competition.
In 2007, D&S plans the opening of 30 outlets in the Chilean capital Santiago, as well as some other units, and to diversify its operations. The cost of the annual expansion plan was not disclosed. In 2006, D&S, which operates over 80 supermarkets and hypermarkets Lider in Chile, as well as shopping malls, envisaged US$150mn (€115.7mn) for its expansion, partially financed through bond issues.
