Bulgarian shoppers buy at the other side

Bulgaria's EU membership could well trigger increased border shopping traffic with Bulgarians living close to the borders with neighbouring Macedonia.

This would mean increase in the sales for Macedonian retailers. The reason for this? Bulgarians fear price hikes due to EU membership and Macedonian retailers are already preparing to welcome large amounts of Bulgarian shoppers.

According to the local press, the European Union has not only brought modernisation to Bulgaria, but also a considerable increase in the prices, which obligates consumers to find better and lower prices at the other side of the border.
