Tesco thwarted in Central Europe
Slovakian competition authorities prohibit the purchase by Tesco of the Carrefour-owned stores in Slovakia. The authorities think the acquisition would make Tesco too dominant in the Slovakian market.
Carrefour and Tesco reached an agreement to switch stores in markets where both are operational and one of them has a too small market share. The European Commission did allow Tesco the purchase of stores in Czechia, but the decision regarding Slovakia was left to local authorities who said no.
Yesterday the British retailer was also rebuffed in the Czech Republic where it didn't get permission to refurbish a store which is situated in a building which is considered as a cultural heritage site.
