Spar accellerates store openings in Romania

Spar Romania accellerates its store opening in the Balkan country. After opening its first two stores in August 2006 and early this month, Spar Romania yesterday opened its third store (in the city of Deva). Spar Romania plans to rapidly extend its portfolio as seven more store openings are planned this year. One of these will be a hypermarket and three new Spar stores will be converted former Diskont stores. Spar Romania acquired this chain last August.

Spar Romania's rapid pace of new store openings is remarkable, as it investigated the local market already since May 2005. It lasted over 15 months before the first Spar store was opened, but now Spar Romania is set to rapid expansion.
The new store in Deva has a total sales area of 1,450 square metres and offers some 7,000 products, 30 per cent of which are fresh products. The store required investment of €3.15mn and employs 70 people.
