Biedronka to revolutionise Polish pharmacy market
Portuguese retailer Jeronimo Martins intends to start its own chain of pharmacies in Poland. In Poland Jeronimo Martins owns the discount chain Biedronka, with 820 stores Poland’s largest chain of supermarkets. If each of these stores would open an instore pharmacy, the PLZ20 bn (€5bn) Polish pharmaceutical market would be shaken up thoroughly. Currently Grupa Farmaceutyczna is Poland’s largest chain of pharmacies with 300 outlets.
“We will conduct large-scale market research into Poland’s pharmaceutical market”, a Jeronimo Martins spokesperson said to the Polish news bulletin. Many pharmacists in Poland allegedly have difficulty in making ends meet, but still representatives of the existing structures don’t respond positively to Jeronimo Martin’s intentions. “Pharmacies are not about business, but people’s health. Nothing good will come from creating a large pharmacy chain. Poland’s pharmacy market is currently the most open in Europe”, Andrzej Wrobel, head of Poland’s National Pharmacy Chamber told the Polish news bulletin.
