Shinsegae expands discount network in China
Shinsegae will open its seventh discount store in China this week, boosting its network in Shanghai. The South Korean retailer plans to open one more store in Shanghai, a move that would challenge its rival Carrefour.

“E-Mart is enjoying a reputation as the only Asian discounter capable of winning over Western discount stores. We provide low-priced products in luxurious stores,” said Chung Min-ho, head of E-Mart’s wholly-owned subsidiary in Shanghai. The new store will increase the number of E-Mart outlets in Shanghai to five. Two other stores are in Tianjin, northeastern China. Carrefour already operates nine stores in Shanghai where other international players from the US, Taiwan and France are also active. E-Mart was the first South Korean discounter to enter the China in 1997. It plans to operate 50 stores in China by 2012.
