Coles and Woolies tied for cheapest groceries
GROCERYchoice, Australia's food retail watchdog, has released figures from its latest survey, revealing that the cheapest basket of groceries is now evenly split between the nation's two supermarket giants.
GROCERYchoice basket prices reflect the price of typical grocery baskets from a range of supermarket retailers located across Australia. The grocery basket prices for each supermarket retailer represent the average basket price for that retailer within a specified region. They do not represent the price for a specific individual supermarket outlet.
The survey, based on 500 products bought from supermarkets across the country, shows that Coles and Woolworths are the cheapest on a total grocery basket in 30 regions each; however, the price survey of a basic staples' basket shows discount supermarket Aldi remains the cheapest.
