Lidl to enter US market

German discount retailer Lidl is planning to open up an additional 1,000 stores in Germany, bringing the total there to 4,000 stores. CEO of Lidl's parent company Schwarz Gruppe, said: “Currently, we are preparing to enter the (US) market.

The next foreign market the company wants to enter, however, is Switzerland, where Lidl is to open the first 80 stores in 2009.

Lidl is Germany's second biggest discounter, after its archrival Aldi. It aims to get a US foothold by 2012 while it builds up its European business, Gehrig added. Lidl hopes expansion can help it overtake Aldi.
