Metro puts RFID tags on meat

Metro’s new Real Future Store, located in Toenisvorst (Germany), features RFID tags on its packaged meat products. The items are displayed on the sales floor in a special refrigerator called Smart Freezer which features integrated RFID readers.

The Smart Freezer monitors the goods in stock and notifies the Master Butcher staff whenever products run low or “Best-before” dates are approaching. The Smart Freezer signalizes the approach of each item’s best-before date. Staff can then take targeted action to remove the affected goods from the sales floor.

For customers that prefer to disable the Smart Chip after purchasing an item, De-Activators can be found next to the store exits.  METRO Group has already been using RFID throughout Germany in its logistics and warehouse management. This makes it possible to automatically track the path taken by goods from the producer to the store shelf.
