Carrefour China targeted by anti-French supporters
Carrefour in China has had to deal with angry protesters. Hundreds of protesters have gathered around the French supermarket shops this week. The rallies started as a reaction to the pro-Tibetan protests held in Paris in April during the torch relay.
The protesters are accusing the French based retailer’s head, Jose-Luis Duran, of supporting the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader. The protests in China ranging in size from a dozen people to a few hundred broke out in at least five regional Chinese cities, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.
In reaction to the demonstrations, Carrefour has launched a PR campaign reaffirming its support for China and the Olympics. Carrefour has refused to comment on whether calls for a boycott had affected the chain's business. The retailer has 112 stores across China and employs more than 44,000 people.
