European supermarkets could be investigated for abuse
Several European Member of Parliament (MPs) are urging the European Commission to investigate the effects of supermarkets on producers and consumers. European parliamentarians will start talks with the Competition Directorate to investigate the way supermarkets behave on the market.
The MPs fear the creation of a monopoly, since only several supermarket brands mushroom all over Europe. The Competition Commission (CC) has acknowledged problems with the way supermarkets treat farmers and is considering strengthening the Supermarket Code of Practice and introducing a watchdog.
It has been suggested that the European Commission propose some measures and rules to protect both consumers and producers of abuses. The primary targets for investigation include Carrefour, Metro, Tesco, Rewe and Schwarz Group. They jointly cover some 70% of the whole market.
