Yucaipa makes bid for Interstate Bakeries

Yucaipa Companies LLC has made another bid to acquire Interstate Bakeries, which is just out of bankruptcy. The bid, which values Interstate at US$580 million, did not include Bimbo Bakeries, the Mexico-based partner included in Yucaipa’s initial bid for Interstate last year.

Interstate said it will begin talks with Yucaipa, but would not consider the bid “qualified” until Yucaipa provides additional details, including a business plan and specific concessions being agreed to by labor. Interstate, in Chapter 11 protection since 2004, is the maker of brands that include Wonder Bread, Hostess and Drake’s.

Yucaipa forged its reputation as the ultimate grocery shopper, executing a series of grocery chain mergers and acquisitions involving such companies as Fred Meyer, Ralphs, and Jurgensen's that put the company on the supermarket map. The Yucaipa Companies currently owns a stake in SUPERVALU, but sold its interest in Pathmark to A&P in 2007.
