Ready-made organic meals
A recent report from independent market analyst Datamonitor has found that UK consumers are set to become Europe's biggest spenders on organic food. The organic market has witnessed unprecedented growth over the past ten years and its popularity seems sure to continue into 2005.
Elsevier Food International, Vol. 4, Number 3, September 2001
Motivated by a number of factors, primarily recent food scares, the increased consumer interest in health and well being, the growth of the premium food market and the recent controversy surrounding the use of GMOs, the organic market has captured the imagination of consumers and retailers alike. Government bodies have been created to monitor the growth of this market and farmers are being encouraged to convert by independent organisations and veterinary surgeons. The UK's per capita spend on organic ready made meals in 2000 was $1.14, followed by the US with a figure of $1.05. Next, and considerably further down the scale, comes Germany with a spend of $0.06.
All the countries surveyed are either spending an equal amount or more on frozen organic meals than they are on chilled ones. Clearly, then, it's not just health but convenience factors that are consumers' prime considerations.
