English lamb enters new markets

The UK, the largest exporter of lamb in the Northern Hemisphere with sales of 86,000 tonnes of sheep meat worth € 310 m. in 2006 is entering new markets such as Cyprus, Malta, Finland, the Czech Republic, Baltic countries, Singapore, Dubai and Hong Kong.

Jean-Pierre Garnier, Export Manager for the Meat and Livestock Commission said: “Although sales in France, Belgium and Southern Europe will remain the core of our exports over the next few years, English lamb is sought by discerning buyers in an increasing number of other markets. Importers are buying the product due to its superior visual and eating quality, this despite its higher price.”
